Canada's Food Guide is an excellent tool to help you determine how much food you need to consume on a daily basis. Throughout the HIP program we ask that you try to follow Canada's Food Guide. As well, you will be asked on a weekly basis to report your dietary intake based on Canadian Food Guide servings.
The first few weeks of nutrition videos will outline each of the food groups, including appropriate serving sizes and healthy food choices. Below is a summary of the recommended number of food guide servings you should consume from each food group on a daily basis.
- Vegetables and Fruit = 7-8 Servings Per Day
- Grain Products = 6-7 Servings Per Day
- Milk and Alternatives = 2 Servings Per Day
- Meat and Alternatives = 2 Servings Per Day
If you are breastfeeding or pumping it is recommended that you consume an extra 2 to 3 food guide servings per day. These servings may come from any of the four food groups.
It is recommended that you limit your daily servings of fat and oil to 2 to 3 tablespoons. This includes items such as margarine, butter, and olive oil.
